Basketball Recap: Mercy Takes a Loss

After flying high against Lincoln Lutheran last Tuesday, Mercy came back down to earth. The Mercy Monarchs fell to the Gross Catholic Cougars 66-61. Despite running the score up even higher than they did in their prior game last Tuesday (56), the Monarchs still had to take the loss.

When it comes to explaining why Mercy lost on Thursday, don't look at Madisyn Grzebielski. Despite the final result, she posted 14 points and eight rebounds. What's more, Grzebielski also racked up two assists, the most she's had since back in February of 2024. Another player making a difference was Hadley Bryan, who scored 13 points.

Even though they lost, Mercy smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 12 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least ten offensive rebounds in five consecutive contests.

Mercy now has a losing record at 6-7. As for Gross Catholic, their win was their fifth straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 9-2.

Mercy will welcome Roncalli Catholic at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Mercy is facing Roncalli Catholic at the right time seeing as Roncalli Catholic is stuck on a five-game losing streak. As for Gross Catholic, they didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next matchup, a 67-42 victory against Buena Vista on the 17th.
