Softball Preview: Hampden Broncos vs. Skowhegan River Hawks

Hampden is 1-9 against Skowhegan since April of 2019 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Monday. The Broncos will challenge the River Hawks at 4:00 p.m. Both come into the game bolstered by wins in their previous matches.

While Hampden's victory against Mt. Blue wasn't quite the blowout it was the last time the pair played, they still came out on top. The Broncos came out on top against the Cougars on Friday by a score of 5-4 (the very same score they lost by in their prior game). The Broncos haven't had any issues with the Cougars recently, as the game was their seventh consecutive win against them.

Cat Facchini spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered four earned runs on eight hits and racked up 12 Ks.

On the hitting side, Aubrey Shaw was excellent, going 2-for-4 with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI.

Meanwhile, Skowhegan got themselves on the board against Messalonskee on Friday, but Messalonskee never followed suit. They were the clear victors by a 15-0 margin over the Eagles. That's two games straight that the River Hawks have won by exactly 15 runs.

Abigale Carey made a big impact no matter where she played. She didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only two hits while striking out seven over four innings pitched. Carey was also big at the plate, going 3-for-4 with three runs and one RBI.

In other batting news, Skowhegan got a massive performance out of Harper Turner, who got on base in all four of her plate appearances with four runs, two RBI, and one double. Maesyn Atherton was another key player, getting on base in three of her four plate appearances with three runs, two RBI, and one double.

Skowhegan always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .667. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Messalonskee only posted an OBP of .235.

Skowhegan's record now sits at 2-0. As for Hampden, the victory got them back to even at 1-1.

Hampden came out on top in a nail-biter against Skowhegan in their previous meeting back in May of 2025, sneaking past 3-2. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Broncos since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
