Preview: Elmira Express vs. Corning-Painted Post Hawks
Elmira and Corning-Painted Post are an even 3-3 against one another since January of 2022, but not for long. The Elmira Express will head out on the road to face off against the Corning-Painted Post Hawks at 7:15 p.m. on Thursday. Elmira is no doubt hoping to put an end to a three-game streak of away losses.
Last Tuesday, Elmira got the win against Binghamton by a conclusive 56-35.
Elmira's success was spearheaded by the efforts of Mariah Matias, who dropped a double-double on 20 points and 12 rebounds, and Ellie Clearwater, who scored 23 points along with seven rebounds. Matias is on a roll when it comes to rebounds, as she's now pulled down ten or more in the last 14 games she's played. Caitlyn Wagner was another key contributor, scoring four points along with ten rebounds and four steals.
Meanwhile, sadly, Corning-Painted Post is still looking for their first win of the season after eight matchups. They took a 40-31 hit to the loss column at the hands of Horseheads on Friday. While losing is never fun, Corning-Painted Post can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' New York basketball rankings (they are ranked 482nd, while Horseheads is ranked 69th).
Elmira now has a winning record of 9-8. As for Corning-Painted Post, their defeat dropped their record down to 0-8.
Everything came up roses for Elmira against Corning-Painted Post when the teams last played back in January as the squad secured a 53-25 win. The rematch might be a little tougher for Elmira since the squad won't have the home-court advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
