Basketball Recap: Gaston Christian Drops Highest Score of Season Against Concord Academy

Gaston Christian fought the good fight in their overtime game against Concord Academy on Tuesday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell just short of the Concord Academy Eagles by a score of 80-77. One positive for Gaston Christian, at least, is that this was the most points they've scored all season.

Several Eagles players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Cameron Newman, who dropped a double-double on 16 points and ten assists. That's the most assists Newman has posted since back in February of 2024. The team also got some help courtesy of Alessandro Luparia, who went 7 of 11 on his way to 21 points and three steals.

Newman wasn't the only one working in the assists department: Gaston Christian was working as a unit and finished the game with 22 assists. That's the most assists they've managed all season.

Concord Academy's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Alek Kornacki led the charge by going 7 of 14 on his way to 22 points and seven boards. The team also got some help courtesy of Lincoln Raper, who posted 17 points in addition to five boards and three steals.

Gaston Christian moved to 15-5 with that loss, which also ended their three-game winning streak. As for Concord Academy, the victory was the fourth in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 19-2.

Gaston Christian and Concord Academy should be looking forward to their upcoming games as both have a sizable advantage in the MaxPreps North Carolina Rankings. Gaston Christian (ranked 19th) will meet Westminster Catawba Christian (ranked 257th) at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. Gaston Christian is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 60.3 points per game this season. Similarly, Concord Academy (ranked fifth) will meet Carmel Christian (ranked 44th) at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday.
