Basketball Recap: Central Takes a Loss

Central lost against Cheraw back in January of 2024 and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Thursday. The Central Eagles took a 55-44 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Cheraw Braves. While losing is never fun, the Eagles can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' South Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 259th, while the Braves are ranked 127th).

When it comes to explaining why Central lost, don't look at Jordyn Griffin. Despite the final result, she almost dropped a double-double on 13 points and nine rebounds. What's more, Griffin also racked up six steals, the most she's had since back in January of 2024. Shalesshia Walls was another key player, putting up five points and eight rebounds.

Even though they lost, Central was working as a unit and finished the game with 12 assists. That's the most assists they've managed all season.

Cheraw's win was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Sa'Nya Murray, who posted 15 points along with six steals and five boards. The team also got some help courtesy of Cherita Burns, who put up seven points and 12 steals.

Central is on a six-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 1-12. As for Cheraw, they are on a roll lately: they've won six of their last eight matches, which provided a nice bump to their 11-5 record this season.

Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Central will welcome Buford at 6:15 p.m. on Tuesday. Central is facing Buford at the right time seeing as Buford is stuck on a four-game losing streak. As for Cheraw, they will look to defend their home court on Tuesday against Chesterfield at 6:00 p.m.
