Soccer Game Preview: Nelson County vs. Appomattox County

The Nelson County Governors will venture away from home to square off against the Appomattox County Raiders at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Both teams are coming into the matchup red-hot, with Nelson County sitting on seven straight wins and Appomattox County on five.

Nelson County had to skate by with only a one-goal margin when they last took the pitch, which might have inspired the three-goal drubbing they dealt Stuarts Draft on Monday. The Governors put the hurt on the Cougars with a sharp 4-1 victory. Considering Nelson County have won seven contests by more than two goals this season, Monday's blowout was nothing new.

For whatever reason, it's the away team that's had the advantage when Appomattox County and Altavista meet (three straight games heading into this one) and that held true again on Friday. The Raiders never let the Colonels get on the board and left with a 5-0 win. Landon May was a massive factor in the win as he booted in four goals all by himself.

Nelson County pushed their record up to 9-0-2 with the victory, which was their fourth straight at home. Those home wins came thanks in part to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they scored 20 goals over those four games. As for Appomattox County, their victory bumped their record up to 6-3-1.

Nelson County was able to grind out a solid win over Appomattox County in their previous matchup back in May of 2024, winning 2-0. Will the Governors repeat their success, or do the Raiders have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
