The University Prep Jaguars will face off against the Vasquez Mustangs at 3:15 p.m. on Friday. University Prep will be coming into the contest with an undefeated record on the line.
University Prep is headed into the match having just posted their closest win since March 6, 2024 on Thursday. They skirted past Academy for Academic Excellence 6-4.
Angel Herrera made a big impact while hitting and pitching. He pitched two innings while giving up no earned runs off two hits. Herrera was also solid in the batter's box, scoring two runs while going 1-for-3.
In other batting news, Ricky Gonzalez was excellent, scoring a run and stealing a base while getting on base in three of his four plate appearances. Another player making a difference was Jorge Escalante, who scored a run while going 1-for-2.
Meanwhile, Vasquez suffered their closest loss since February 17, 2024 on Monday. They fell just short of Eastside by a score of 4-2. The loss was the Mustangs' first of the season.
Vasquez saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Ben Diaz, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with one RBI.
Even though they lost, Vasquez hit smart and finished the game with only one strikeout. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now struck out at most five strikeouts every time they've taken the field this season.
Having lost for the first time this season, Vasquez fell to 2-1. As for University Prep, their victory bumped their record up to 4-0.
The pitchers for both teams better look sharp on Friday as neither team is afraid to steal. University Prep has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 8.5 stolen bases per game. However, it's not like Vasquez struggles in that department as they've been averaging 3 stolen bases. The only question left is which team can snag more.
University Prep was able to grind out a solid win over Vasquez in their previous matchup back in February of 2023, winning 8-5. Will University Prep repeat their success, or does Vasquez have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
