4A Region IV District 31 recap October 22, 2013

Adding to the longest winning streak in 4A Region IV District 31 this week, Flour Bluff beat Cigarroa 55-27. The victory was the fourth in a row for the Hornets.

Nixon moved up to 549 from 603 in the state rankings this week, the biggest jump in the league. The Mustangs were able to move up by beating Miller 39-9.

Nixon's dynamic duo of Ralph Perez and Joel Trevino proved tough for the Buccaneers to stop, as they were the top passer and receiver in the league this week. Perez threw for 247 yards and 3 touchdowns and Trevino had 93 yards receiving. Mateo Rincon helped Nixon's passing attack out by catching 5 balls for 86 yards.

He went 13-22 with 0 interceptions.

Matthew Merino provided a threat through the air and on the ground as Ray topped Martin. He completed 11 passes for 98 yards and also ran for 191 yards. Merino's favorite target this week was Carlos Montano, who caught 4 passes for 47 yards.

Leading the league in both passing and receiving yards, the Texans' Merino and Armando Garza have proven to be a lethal combination. Merino has thrown for 1,431 yards this season, while Garza has 30 catches for 569 yards. Alice's Joseph Cantu leads the league in rushing yards with 864.

The Coyotes' offense has recorded 326 points this season, making them No. 1 in the league, while Tommy Ramirez's team has permitted only 78 on the year.

A big matchup in 4A Region IV District 31 this week will be when Flour Bluff takes on Ray. As it stands, Darrell Andrus' team is in third, while Cody Simper's team is in first.
