Winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Medina Valley). They snuck past the United Longhorns with a 64-58 victory on Friday. This was a revenge game for the Panthers: when they faced off against the Longhorns back in December of 2024, they had to take a 62-55 defeat.
Medina Valley got their win on the backs of several key players, but it was Kyla Carter out in front who went 8 for 18 on her way to 18 points along with five rebounds and five steals. That's the most points Carter has posted since back in November of 2024. Another player making a difference was Tori Ruffin, who dropped a double-double on 14 points and 12 boards.
Despite the loss, United saw an underclassman step up: freshman Katia Velazquez dropped a double-double on 25 points and 13 rebounds. Those 25 points set a new season-high mark for Velazquez. The team also got some help courtesy of Alejandra Idrogo, who went 6 of 15 en route to 16 points and three blocks.
The victory was the fifth in a row for Medina Valley, bringing their record for this year to 18-14. The wins came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 57.4 points per game. As for United, they dropped their record down to 17-14 with the defeat, which was their third straight on the road.
Medina Valley wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next game, a 59-44 loss against United South on the 28th. United has also already played their next contest, a 75-38 win against Eagle Pass on the 28th.
