National Highlight Reel: Terrell Rogers scores school-record 56 points

Indian Land (Fort Mill, S.C.) set a school record last week with a 137-71 rout of Central (Pageland, S.C).

The ringleader was Terrell Rogers, a 5-foot-9 junior guard, who notched a school record of his own with 56 points. Rogers, who is averaging 29.2 points, drilled 18 field goals and was 17-for-19 from the free throw line.

Rogers also has an eighth grade brother, Darnell, who is a varsity member.

* A recent issue of Sports Illustrated spotlighted the condition of AAU basketball in a feature story about NBA standout Tyson Chandler, who attempted to sponsor his own high school team east of Los Angeles last summer. He drove 120 miles every other day for practices, instituted a mandatory grade point average and offered no perks.



Chandler told writer Lee Jenkins, "I paid for everything because I wanted it all on the up-and-up. And you know what's sad? I couldn't recruit any top guys."

* Central Dauphin (Harrisburg, Pa.) outlasted Bishop McDevitt (Harrisburg, Pa.), 83-81, in triple overtime. Devin Thomas, a 6-8 junior who played the final 20 minutes with four fouls, dominated with 43 points and 23 rebounds.

* Cowan (Muncie, Ind.) nipped Burris (Muncie, Ind.), 73-69, in a four-overtime thriller.

* Ronnie Willoughby scored a school-record 46 points to lead Avon Lake (Ohio) to a 94-54 rout of Olmsted Falls (Ohio).

* Oak Park (Calif.) freshman Trent Mogavero drilled 10 of his 11 3-point shots and scored 32 points in the first quarter of a freshman-sophomore game against Fillmore (Calif.). He played sparingly the rest of the game.

* Senior guard Cezar Guerrero scored 41 points as St. John Bosco (Bellflower, Calif.) edged Orange Lutheran (Orange, Calif.), 68-65.



* Ryan Taylor, a 6-6 senior, compiled 37 points, 20 rebounds and six blocks to help Western (Louisville, Ky.) upset nine-time champion Scott County (Georgetown, Ky.), 83-80, in overtime during the Toyota Classic semifinals.

* Padua Franciscan (Parma, Ohio) lost to Lake Catholic (Mentor, Ohio), 79-68, despite 42 points by sophomore Tyler Ptacek.
 
* Brett Kingma, a 6-2 senior guard, scored 43 points – including 10 3-pointers – as Jackson (Mill Creek, Wash.) rolled past Edmonds-Woodway (Edmonds, Wash.), 91-74. The University of Oregon recruit sat out the final five minutes.

* Wilson (Beckley, W. Va.) handed South Charleston (W.Va.) a 103-97 setback in three overtimes.

* Blue-chip junior basketball player Ricardo Ledo (6-5) has transferred from South Kent (Conn.) to Notre Dame Prep (Fitchburg, Mass.), according to ZagsBlog.

* Standout freshman basketball players Devin Burleson and Namon Wright have transferred from Price (Los Angeles) to Pacific Hills (Los Angeles), according to the Los Angeles Daily News. They started the school year at Sierra Canyon (Chatsworth, Calif.), making an amazing three high schools in one semester.

* Milestone coaching victories: Kent Houser of Greenwood (Millerstown, Pa.) notched No. 400, while Gary Barns of Goodrich (Mich.) picked up No. 300.

Haley Weathers dominated with 50 points as Luther (Okla.) crushed Maud (Okla.), 79-9. She has signed with Missouri Southern State.

* Junior guard Michelle Miller scored 47 points as Poly (Pasadena, Calif.) routed Flintridge Prep (Calif.), 80-37. She has a 4.9 GPA and is considering colleges such as Harvard and Princeton.

* Senior Chelsey Smith scored 45 points to lead Pineville (Ky.) to a 79-63 victory over Model (Richmond, Ky.).

* Atlantic (Port Orange, Fla.) sophomore Ronni Williams had 45 points, 19 rebounds, five steals, four blocks and four assists during a 66-65 double-overtime victory against Apopka (Fla.).

* Senior guard Jude Schimmel turned in a triple-double (30 points, 13 rebounds and 12 steals) as Franklin (Portland, Ore.) defeated Cleveland (Portland, Ore.), 56-44.

* Sophomore Gigi Bailey had 36 points, 14 rebounds and 10 blocks to lead Charlotte Christian (N.C.) to a 70-49 victory against Country Day (Charlotte, N.C.).



* North Carolina State recruit Erica Donovan had 41 points and 18 rebounds as Jay (San Antonio) edged Stevens (San Antonio) 78-71 in overtime. Alexis Govan, a Western Kentucky recruit, notched 38 in a losing effort. Both players wear uniform number 21.

* Jordan Johnson had 40 points and 11 rebounds to spark Hatton (Town Creek, Ala.) to a 70-49 victory over Lawrence County (Moulton, Ala.).

* Riverdale (Murfreesboro, Tenn.) overcame a 17-point deficit to nip Central (Memphis, Tenn.), 74-72, in overtime for its 47th consecutive victory.

* Tempe Prep (Ariz.) snapped a 48-game winning streak with a 50-48 victory over Valley Christian (Chandler, Ariz.). Tempe Prep, which has four players who are at least 6 feet tall, tied the game on a 3-pointer by senior captain Elizabeth Lebeau with 12 seconds left, then won it on a buzzer-beater by 6-2 junior Janel Brinkman. It marked only the seventh loss in four years for the defending Class 2A state champs.

* Coaching milestones: Lelani Gordon of Riverview (Fla.) earned her 400th victory, while Dave Cox of Plymouth (Ind.) achieved No. 300.

Bobby Carroll is leaving South Pointe (Rock Hill, S.C.), where he coached this year's No. 1-ranked player, Jadeveon Clowney, to return to his hometown of York (S.C.) as head football coach.



* Ken Netherland, who retired from St. George's (Collierville, Tenn.) less than a month ago, has been hired to start the football program at Lausanne Collegiate (Memphis, Tenn.). The 71-year-old coach is the biggest winner in Tennessee history with 362 victories.

St. Pius X Catholic (Atlanta) senior Shelby Ashe broke her own national record when she fired the 20-pound weight 69 feet, 4 inches during the Martin Luther King Open in Marietta, Ga.

* Najee Glass of St. Peter's Prep (Jersey City, N.J.) broke a 27-year-old national record when he won the 500-meter race in 1 minute, 2.22 seconds during the New Balance Games in New York City. However, the time now is being investigated due to possible irregularities.

WRESTLING: BLAIR WINS FINAL FOUR DUALS
Blair Academy (Blairstown, N.J.) defeated High Point (Sussex, N.J.), 54-10, to win the National High School Coaches Association Final Four Duals in Forks Township, Pa. Blair, which defeated five opponents during the tourney, is ranked No. 3 in the country, while High Point is No. 15.

* In a matchup of Ohio's two top teams – both ranked high in the nation - St. Edward (Lakewood, Ohio) nipped Graham (St. Paris, Ohio), 27-25. The winning points were provided by sophomore Anthony Stanley, who edged Chase Crabtree, 5-3, in overtime at 103 pounds.

* Caro (Mich.) coach Steve Ley notched his 400th victory over the weekend.

* Valencia (Calif.) junior third baseman Trey Williams has made a commitment to Pepperdine University, according to the Los Angeles Times. The 6-2, 205-pounder is ranked as the No. 3 player in the junior class by Perfect Game USA.
