Small school baseball players don't often get recognized as the best player in the state, especially a state the size of California. But that's exactly what Kerman's Carlos Salazar did this season when Gatorade selected him as the state's player of the year.

The hard-throwing right-hander also became the highest drafted small school player in the country when he went to the Atlanta Braves with the 102nd overall pick in the Major League Baseball First Year Player Selection in June.

Salazar has also been named the MaxPreps Small Schools National Player of the Year and he heads the 60-member Small Schools All-American Team.

Salazar beat out the likes of Denton Keys of Rye (Colo.) and Drew Ward of Leedey (Okla.) for the honor. He went 9-2 for Kerman while striking out 147 and posting a miniscule 0.09 ERA.

The MaxPreps Small Schools All-American Team includes a 30-member first team and a 30-member second team. The teams are selected from schools who play in state enrollments that generally have fewer than 1,000 students.
