Volleyball Recap: Seckman Falls Despite Big Games from Zoe Matus and Vanessa Wason

It was a proper cat-fight when Seckman duked it out with Festus on Monday. The Jaguars fell just short of the Tigers by a score of 3-2. The Jaguars were not able to repeat the success they had when they faced the Tigers earlier this season, when they won 2-1.

In a back-and-forth that saw neither team win consecutive sets, Seckman sadly dropped the once that decided the match. The match finished with set scores of 25-21, 19-25, 25-22, 25-27, 15-11.

Seckman's loss came despite strong showings from Vanessa Wason and Zoe Matus. Wason had ten digs and two aces, while Matus had 17 kills, seven digs, and two aces. Matus has been hot for a while, having posted six or more kills the last nine times she's played.

Festus found their leader in sophomore Layla Pendergrass, who had five digs and four aces. Those four aces set a new season-high mark for Pendergrass.

Seckman's defeat ended a three-match streak of away wins and brought them to 20-8-2. As for Festus, the win (which was their third in a row) raised their record to 19-9-2.

Coincidentally, Seckman and Festus will both be playing Oakville the next time they take the court. The Tigers will head out to face the Tigers at 5:45 p.m. on Wednesday, while the Jaguars will host them at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday.
