Basketball Game Preview: Las Animas Trojans vs. Holly Wildcats

Las Animas hasn't had much luck against Holly recently, but that could start to change on Thursday. The Las Animas Trojans will challenge the Holly Wildcats at 4:30 p.m. Las Animas is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 56.4 points per game this season.

Las Animas is headed into the contest out to prove that what happened against Swallows Charter Academy on Thursday (when they were outscored in every quarter) was just a minor bump in the road. Las Animas came up short against Swallows Charter Academy, falling 72-52. The Trojans were in a tough position after the first half, with the score already sitting at 51-23.

The loss doesn't tell the whole story though, as several players had good games. One of the most active was Logan Servaes, who dropped a double-double on 16 points and 12 boards. Those 16 points gave him a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Aaron Vargas, who went 6 for 12 on his way to 15 points and four steals.

Even though they lost, Las Animas smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 12 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least 12 offensive rebounds in five consecutive games.

Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Holly). They put the hurt on Springfield with a sharp 68-44 victory on Saturday. The Wildcats have made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won four matchups by 22 points or more this season.

Holly now has a winning record of 5-4. As for Las Animas, their defeat dropped their record down to an identical 5-4.

Las Animas came up short against Holly when the teams last played back in February of 2024, falling 61-50. Can Las Animas avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
