Flag Football Recap: Johnson Takes a Loss

Johnson had lost four straight at home dating back to last season, but on Thursday they dropped down to 0-9 to make it five. They took a hard 37-19 fall against the Effingham County Rebels. The Atomsmashers gained 100 more yards on the day, but it was the Rebels that made the best use of them.

When it comes to explaining why Johnson lost, don't look at Alona Hunt. Despite the final result, she rushed for 65 yards and one TD on only six carries. Hunt didn't just play on offense: she also picked up a sack and made one tackle.

While Johnson came up short, they sure didn't make it easy for Effingham County: they limited their QB to completion percentage of just 50%. The team can thank Malayla Wright for the heroic effort on defense: she. Johnson wasn't nearly as limited: they posted one of 64.7%.

As for Effingham County, the victory made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 5-3. Considering their offense had been struggling lately, the high-scoring outing was a much-needed turnaround.

While passing duties were split, you can't argue with the impact Ivyana Jenkins and Jessica Cooper both made on the matchup. Jenkins threw for 30 yards and three touchdowns while Cooper rushed for 45 yards and a pair of scores.

Johnson will square off against Savannah at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Effingham County, they will challenge Glynn Academy at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
