Baseball Recap: Staples-Motley Sets Scoring Season-High Against Pelican Rapids

Winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Staples-Motley). They blew past the Pelican Rapids Vikings 23-5 on Tuesday. The win was a breath of fresh air for the Cardinals as it put an end to their five-game losing streak.

Hayden Rutherford made a big impact no matter where he played. He looked comfortable on the mound, striking out nine batters over five innings while giving up just two earned (and three unearned) runs off three hits (and only one walk). He has been consistent recently: he hasn't given up more than two walks in three consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, going 3-for-4 with three runs, three RBI, and one double.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Colbe Tappe, who went 3-for-5 with three runs, four RBI, and one triple. Elijah Kossan was another key player, getting on base in four of his six plate appearances with four runs and two RBI.

Staples-Motley always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .609. That's the best OBP they've posted all season.

Staples-Motley's victory bumped their record up to 2-6-1. As for Pelican Rapids, they are on a six-game losing streak (dating back to last season) that has dropped them down to 0-5.

Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Staples-Motley will challenge Breckenridge at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday. As for Pelican Rapids, they will be playing in front of their home fans against Frazee at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday.
