Baseball Recap: St. Monica Comes Up Short

St. Monica dropped down to 8-16-1 on Tuesday, ending the team's three-game streak of wins. They fell just short of the Santa Monica Vikings by a score of 6-4. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest loss the Mariners have suffered since March 4th.

Alonzo Gonzalez was huge while hitting and pitching even without the win. He tossed 3.2 innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than two walks in 15 consecutive appearances. He was also solid in the batter's box, going 1-for-2 with two stolen bases and one run.

In other pitching news, St. Monica got a good showing from Julian Salcedo, who tossed one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits. Salcedo is becoming a predictor of the Mariners' success: when he allows at most one hit the team is 2-1 (and 6-15-1 when he doesn't).

As for Santa Monica, they pushed their record up to 15-11 with the win, which was their third straight on the road. The road victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 4.0 runs on average over those games.

On Santa Monica's side, Jack Waterstone looked comfortable as he pitched three innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. What's more, Waterstone posted four strikeouts, the most he's had since back in April.

At the plate, Atticus Neal was excellent, going 1-for-2 with two runs, one double, and one RBI. That's the most runs he has posted since back in March. Another player making a difference was Ryan Breslo, who went 1-for-2 with two RBI.
