Softball Recap: El Camino Extends Winning Streak to Three

El Camino entered their tilt with Canyon Crest Academy on Thursday with two consecutive wins, and they'll enter their next game with three. They put the hurt on the Ravens with a sharp 9-3 win. The result was nothing new for the Wildcats, who have now won 11 matches by six runs or more so far this season.

Kayla Layland tossed a big game, tossing five innings while giving up just one earned (and two unearned) runs off seven hits. She has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't given up more than two walks in 13 consecutive appearances.

On the hitting side, Bella Mendoza and Makayla Boone did most of the damage at the plate: Mendoza went a perfect 3-for-3 with two runs, one stolen base, and one RBI, while Boone went 2-for-4 with one triple, one run, and one double. Another player making a difference was Kailey Dain, who got on base in three of her four plate appearances with two runs and one stolen base.

El Camino was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .385. They are 11-1 when they post a batting average of .375 or better.

El Camino pushed their record up to 16-8 with the victory, which was their third straight at home. Those home wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 8.0 runs over those games. As for Canyon Crest Academy, they have traveled a rocky road recently, having lost six of their last eight games. That's put a noticeable dent in their 13-12-1 record this season.

Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. El Camino will face off against Carlsbad at 4:00 p.m. on Monday. The Lancers will roll in looking for their fourth straight victory, something the Wildcats surely won't give up without a fight. As for Canyon Crest Academy, they will host Vista at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The Panthers have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 9.17 runs per game on average), something the Ravens will no doubt try to take advantage of.
