Volleyball Recap: Sequoyah Chiefs vs. Pope Greyhounds

Sequoyah faced Pope in a battle between two of the state's top teams on Tuesday. The Chiefs fell 3-1 to the Greyhounds. The Chiefs were not able to make up for their defeat to the Greyhounds from their previous meeting back in October of 2024.

Sequoyah started the match hot and won the first set, but they struggled down the stretch and lost the last three. The match finished with set scores of 23-25, 25-16, 25-20, 25-20.

Elle Gemberling paced Sequoyah's offense, picking up 16 kills. Gemberling got some help from Mackinley Parrott and her 34 assists. Leni Hansraj controlled things from the service line, finishing with three aces.

Pope found their leader in sophomore Wynnie Abney, who had 20 digs and two aces. Abney is on a roll when it comes to digs, as she's now had 12 or more in each of the last five games she's played. Julianne Kopach also deserves some recognition as she had her first block of the season.

Sequoyah's loss ended a seven-match streak of away wins dating back to last season and brought them to 17-4. As for Pope, they pushed their record up to 25-7 with the win, which was their third straight at home.

Looking ahead, Sequoyah will venture away from home to take on Cherokee at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday. As for Pope, they will host Pace Academy at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday.
