Football Recap: Washington-Liberty Starts Season with Victory Against Bishop O'connell + How To Watch

Washington-Liberty gave their fans exactly what they wanted out of a home opener on Thursday. They breezed past the Bishop O'Connell Knights to the tune of 55-22. Given the Generals' advantage in MaxPreps' Virginia football rankings (they are ranked 81st, while the Knights are ranked 210th) , the win wasn't entirely unexpected.

David Toepel had a dynamite game, picking up 198 receiving yards and three touchdowns. Jasper Dennis also helped with two TDs in total.

Washington-Liberty didn't let much get past them through the air: they limited Bishop O'Connell to a completion percentage of just 47.6%. That dominant aerial defense primarily came from two players: Lavand Aqrawi and Gabriel Salmeron, who each logged one passes deflected. Washington-Liberty wasn't nearly as limited: they posted one of 82.6%.

Washington-Liberty didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off two passes before the game was over. In fact, those interceptions all came courtesy of defensive juggernaut Miles Whitaker. He got in on the action too, converting a pick into a touchdown.

Despite the loss, Bishop O'Connell still got an impressive performance from Anthony Pham, who rushed for 184 yards and a pair of scores on only 13 carries. Pham really tore up the turf during one magnificent 88-yard run.

Washington-Liberty wasted no time getting back out on the field and has already played their next game, a 41-20 win against McLean on the 5th. As for Bishop O'Connell, they also didn't take long to hit the field again: they've already played their next matchup, a 42-0 loss against St. Albans on the 5th.
