Basketball Recap: Waterbury Career Academy Gets the Win

If Derby wanted to avenge their loss from the last time they played Waterbury Career Academy, they should've done a better job of containing Malinna Figueroa. The Waterbury Career Academy Spartans simply couldn't be stopped on Tuesday as they easily beat the Derby Red Raiders 57-29 thanks in part to Figueroa, who posted 25 points. That makes it four consecutive games in which she has scored at least a third of Waterbury Career Academy's points.

Another player making a difference was Malahzia Weaver, who had 13 points. She is trending in the right direction considering she's improved her point production for three straight games.

When it comes to explaining why Derby lost, don't look at Shea Gray. Despite the final result, she dropped a double-double on 20 points and 11 rebounds. The game was Gray's ninth in a row with at least ten points. Ilany Fabian also deserves some recognition as she grabbed her first steal of the season.

The win got Waterbury Career Academy back to even at 6-6. As for Derby, they have traveled a rocky road recently having lost seven of their last eight matches, which put a noticeable dent in their 2-9 record this season.

Waterbury Career Academy will take on Naugatuck at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. As for Derby, they will face off against Ansonia at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday.
