Two teams were on the hunt for playoff glory, but only Julian walked away with it. They had just enough and edged out the Ocean View Christian Patriots 3-2 on Tuesday. The victory was familiar territory for the Eagles, who have now won three contests in a row.
Julian had a slow start but a hot finish: after dropping the first two sets, they turned around to win the next three. Once all was said and done, the final score wound up at 23-25, 21-25, 25-20, 28-26, 18-16.
Hailey Bennett paced Julian's offense, picking up 16 kills. Bennett got some help from Cami Siraton and her 22 assists. Siraton was also solid from the service line: she led the team with eight aces.
Ocean View Christian's loss shouldn't obscure the performances of Lyla Crosby, who had 11 aces and seven digs, and Tori Worthington, who had 12 kills, six digs, six aces, and three blocks. Worthington is on a roll when it comes to kills, as she's now had five or more in each of the last five games she's played. Another player making a difference was Yaretz Olvera, who had seven digs, seven aces, six kills, and two blocks.
Julian's win bumped their record up to 14-11. As for Ocean View Christian, they have traveled a rocky road recently, having lost nine of their last 12 matches. That's put a noticeable dent in their 7-11 record this season.
Julian will challenge St. Joseph Academy at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday. Ocean View Christian does not have any more games scheduled as of now.
