Baseball Recap: Deering Victorious

After having lost a blowout in their previous game against Thornton Academy, Deering was happy to have turned things around on Thursday. They had just enough and edged out the Portland Bulldogs 5-4. That result was just more of the same for these two, as the Rams also won the last time the pair played back in May of 2024.

Miles Lawrence and Tavian Lauture made a big impact no matter where they played. On the mound, Lawrence pitched 4.1 innings while giving up just one earned run off two hits. Meanwhile, Lauture struck out eight batters over 4.2 innings while giving up just two earned (and one unearned) runs off six hits. The dominant performance also gave Lawrence a new career-high in strikeouts (five). At bat, Lawrence went 2-for-5 with two runs, one stolen base, and one RBI, while Lauture got on base in four of his five plate appearances with five stolen bases and one run.

In other batting news, Deering let Johnny Bechard and Yadier Lorda-Flores run wild. Bechard went 4-for-5 with one stolen base and one RBI, while Lorda-Flores got on base in three of his five plate appearances with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI. The team also got some help courtesy of Liam Brunelle, who went 2-for-4 with one stolen base, one run, and one double.

Deering's victory bumped their record up to 3-5. As for Portland, their loss was their fifth straight at home, which dropped their record down to 0-8.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Deering will head out to challenge Bonny Eagle at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Portland, they will venture away from home to face off against Scarborough at 4:30 p.m. on Friday. The Red Storm will roll in looking for their sixth straight win, something the Bulldogs surely won't give up without a fight.
