Baseball Game Preview: Maize Eagles vs. South Cougars

The Maize Eagles will square off against the South Cougars at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Maize is coming into the game hot, having won their last seven games.

If Maize beats South with three runs on Tuesday, it's going to be the squad's new lucky number: they've won their past two matches with that exact score. The Eagles never let Blue Valley West get on the board and left with a 3-0 victory on Friday.

Maize got a great performance from Quincy Kohen as he didn't allow a single earned run while striking out ten over six innings pitched. Those ten strikeouts gave Kohen a new career-high.

On the hitting side, Brodie Jarvis was excellent, getting on base in all three of his plate appearances with one stolen base and two RBI. The team also got some help courtesy of Scotty Hadley, who went 1-for-3 with two runs and one stolen base.

Meanwhile, it was close, but on Friday South sidestepped Salina Central for a 2-1 win.

Aidan Speilman spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered a run (which was unearned) on four hits and racked up six Ks.

At the plate, the team relied heavily on Yaden Montanez, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with two runs and one double. That double was his first of the season.

South was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .423. They are a perfect 5-0 when they post a batting average of .375 or better.

South's victory bumped their record up to 9-5. As for Maize, their win bumped their record up to 10-3.

Maize beat South 10-5 in their previous matchup back in April of 2024. Will the Eagles repeat their success, or do the Cougars have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
