Denton Ryan junior Mario Edwards, a 6-4, 275-pound defensive end who might be the state's top recruit in the Class of 2012, orally committed to Florida State last week. Edwards, a fierce pass rusher, is the son of former Florida State cornerback Mario Edwards, who played at Florida State from 1995-99 and then played in the NFL.

"Coming into the trip, it was just a visit to see exactly what they would have me doing," Edwards Jr. told the Tallahassee Democrat. "Everything felt right, so I just went ahead and committed."

Also, Duncanville receiver Jeff Thomas (6-3, 179) was named the MVP of the National Underclassmen Combine in Duncanville over the weekend. Other Dallas-area players given awards at the combine included Sanger's Dane Evans (QB MVP), Plano East's Zach Arnold (LB MVP), Frisco's Carlos Harris (RB MVP), and Mansfield Timberview defensive lineman Rene Lawson, who got the Strongest Man award.
