Softball Recap: Maddy Miller and Madison Mason Secure Win for Stuarts Draft

Stuarts Draft made up a huge gap compared to their last game against Riverheads, but they still couldn't quite topple them. The Cougars' pitcher stepped up to hand the Gladiators a 9-0 shutout on Thursday. Nine seems to be a good number for the Cougars as the squad scooped up a win with the same number of runs in their previous game.

Karlee Layne was a major factor while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run while striking out ten over seven innings pitched. Those ten strikeouts gave her a new career-high. She was also stellar in the batter's box, scoring three runs while getting on base in three of her four plate appearances. She also hit a double, marking her first of the season.

In other batting news, Madison Mason and Maddy Miller did most of the damage at the plate: Mason went 3-for-4 with three doubles, two runs, and one RBI, while Miller scored three runs while going 2-for-4. That's the most runs Miller has posted since back in April of 2024. Addyson Dameron was another key player, going 2-for-4 with three RBI and one triple.

Stuarts Draft kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 11 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least eight hits in four consecutive games.

Stuarts Draft picked up their first home victory, bumping their record up to 3-4. As for Riverheads, they now have a losing record of 1-2.

We've got plenty of inter-region action coming up soon. Stuarts Draft is set to take on their familiar foe Staunton at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Meanwhile, Riverheads will challenge rival Wilson Memorial at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
