The Matoaca Warriors are taking a road trip to challenge the Monacan Chiefs at 5:00 p.m. on Monday. Expect the scorekeeper to be kept busy: if their previous games are any indication, these teams will really light up the scoreboard.
Matoaca's pitching crew heads into the matchup hoping to repeat the dominance they displayed on Thursday. Everything went their way against Hopewell as they made off with a 14-0 win. With that victory, the Warriors brought their scoring average up to 6.4 runs per game.
Abby Davis made a splash while hitting and pitching. She tossed two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. Davis was also solid in the batter's box, going 1-for-3 with two runs and one RBI.
In other batting news, Savannah Wright was incredible, going a perfect 2-for-2 with one triple, one stolen base, and two RBI. That triple marked the first that she has hit this season. Raven Crabtree was another key player, going 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBI.
Matoaca was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .588. The last time their batting average was this high was was before the start of last season.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Monacan). They were the clear victors by a 12-0 margin over L.C. Bird on Thursday. Considering the Chiefs' hitters had been struggling lately, the high-scoring outing was a much-needed turnaround.
The team relied heavily on J'Ael Lewis, who went 3-for-4 with two runs, one stolen base, and one double. The team also got some help courtesy of Caryline Hugenberg, who got on base in three of her four plate appearances with three runs and one RBI.
Monacan's first win this season bumped their record up to 1-5. As for Matoaca, their record now sits at 6-2.
Monacan's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Matoaca has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .467. It's a different story for Monacan, though, as they've only averaged .321. Will they be able to contain Matoaca's hitters?
Matoaca beat Monacan 6-1 in their previous matchup back in March of 2022. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Warriors since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
