The Fort White Indians will take on the Branford Buccaneers at 7:00 p.m. on Monday. Fort White is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7.8 runs per game this season.
Fort White is probably headed into the matchup with a chip on their shoulder considering Lafayette just ended the team's seven-game winning streak on Tuesday. They fell 9-4 to the Hornets. The loss put an end to the Indians' undefeated start to the season.
Fort White saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Aaron Parnell, who went 1-for-3 with two RBI and one double.
Meanwhile, Branford came tearing into Friday's game with three straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 10.7 runs), and they left with even more momentum. They skirted past the Indians 6-4. While the Buccaneers didn't have the best season last year (they finished 9-14), it's starting to look like those struggles are a thing of the past.
Patrick Williams made a splash while hitting and pitching. He struck out six batters over 5.2 innings while giving up just two earned (and one unearned) runs off four hits. Williams was also solid in the batter's box, scoring two runs while going 2-for-3. He has become a key player for Branford: the team is undefeated when he posts at least two runs, but 1-4 otherwise.
In other batting news, Troy Roberts was incredible, scoring two runs and stealing Two bases. while going 2-for-3. He is becoming a predictor of Branford's success: when he posts at least two runs the team is undefeated (and 2-4 when he doesn't). Jackson Skinner was another key player, going 1-for-3 with two stolen bases and one RBI.
Branford's victory was their third straight at home, which pushed their record up to 7-4. The wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 10.0 runs over those games. As for Fort White, their loss was their first of the season and makes their record 7-1.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Monday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Fort White has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 6.6 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Branford struggles in that department as they've been averaging 8.2 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
Fort White came out on top in a nail-biter against Branford in their previous meeting back in February, sneaking past 6-4. Will Fort White repeat their success, or does Branford have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
