Football Game Preview: Burkeville Mustangs vs. Aquilla Cougars

The Burkeville Mustangs are taking a road trip to face off against the Aquilla Cougars at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.

Burkeville took a loss when they played away from home two weeks ago, but their home fans gave them all the motivation they needed on Friday. They put the hurt on Apple Springs with a sharp 43-20 victory. The high-scoring effort was just what the Mustangs needed considering they were shut out in their previous contest.

Burkeville's win was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Chris Spearman, who rushed for 120 yards and one touchdown on only six carries, and also picked up 39 receiving yards. Spearman's longest rush was for an impressive 50 yards, which helps to explain his lofty yards per carry total. Ira Waddy was in the mix too, providing Burkeville with two scores.

They were just one part of a punishing run game: Burkeville was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 464 rushing yards. That's the most rushing yards they've posted since back in October of 2024.

Aquilla hadn't beaten Abbott on the road since November 8, 2019 but that history sure didn't bother them on Friday. The Cougars took their game with ease, bagging a 54-6 victory over the Panthers. The Cougars' win was nothing new given the team hasn't lost yet this season.

Burkeville better keep an eye on Andrew Snipes. He was instrumental in Aquilla's win, picking up 63 receiving yards and a pair of TDs. Snipes also deserves a shoutout for his performance on D, making ten total tackles (2.0 for loss) and defending one pass.

The victory got Burkeville back to even at 5-5. As for Aquilla, their record now sits at 10-0.

Burkeville took a serious blow against Aquilla in their previous meeting back in November of 2024, falling 60-6. Thankfully for the Mustangs, Gavin Earl (who picked up 94 receiving yards and three touchdowns) won't be suiting up this time. Will that be enough to change the final result?
