Basketball Recap: Saturday's Win Is Legion Collegiate Academy's 12th in Last 13 Outings

On Saturday, the Legion Collegiate Academy Lancers earned a 63-53 victory over the Queen's Grant Stallions. Given the Lancers' advantage in MaxPreps' basketball rankings in their respective home states (they are ranked 24th in South Carolina, while the Stallions are ranked 166th in North Carolina), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Legion Collegiate Academy's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Devin Long led the charge by going 6 for 14 en route to 20 points and five boards. Amelia Williams was another key player, putting up 14 points in addition to seven assists and seven rebounds.

Legion Collegiate Academy was working as a unit and finished the game with 13 assists. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Queen's Grant only racked up two assists.

Despite the loss, Queen's Grant saw an underclassman step up: freshman Za'Miya Bynum went 14 of 22 on her way to 35 points along with eight boards and eight steals. That was a full 66% of Queen's Grant's points, marking the 14th time in a row she's posted more than a third of the team's points. Another player making a difference was Misa Garris, who had 16 points and four steals.

Legion Collegiate Academy is on a roll lately: they've won 12 of their last 13 matches, which provided a nice bump to their 18-7 record this season. A key ingredient in that success has been their performance when it comes to three-point shooting accuracy: their three-point shooting accuracy was 36% in those games and 26.9% outside of them. As for Queen's Grant, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 10-4.
