Softball Game Preview: Willcox Cowboys vs. Miami Vandals

Willcox is a perfect 4-0 against Miami since April of 2018 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Wednesday. The Cowboys will square off against the Vandals at 4:00 p.m. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.

Miami will be up against a hot Willcox team: the squad just extended their winning streak to five. The Cowboys blew past Bisbee 25-5 on Tuesday.

Alyssa Gonzalez made a splash while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, tossing five innings while giving up three earned (and two unearned) runs off six hits. She has been consistent: she hasn't given up more than two walks in five consecutive appearances. She was also stellar in the batter's box, going 3-for-4 with one home run, three runs, and three RBI. That's the most runs she has posted since back in March of 2024.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Karlie St Clair, who fired off two home runs, seven RBI, and four runs while going 4-for-5. Those four hits gave her a new career-high. Layla Donahue was another key player, going 3-for-4 with four runs and one RBI.

Willcox was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .611. That was just more of the same: they've now posted a batting average of .522 or higher in five consecutive matchups.

Meanwhile, Miami came tearing into last Monday's game with four straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 9.5 runs), and they left with even more momentum. Everything went their way against the Falcons as they made off with a 13-7 victory.

Willcox's win was their fifth straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 18-8. Those road victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 19.2 runs over those games. As for Miami, their record now sits at 13-7.

Everything went Willcox's way against Miami when the teams last played back in March of 2023, as Willcox made off with a 15-1 win. Will the Cowboys repeat their success, or do the Vandals have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
