Catholic Central is 8-1 against Lake Country Lutheran since May of 2015 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Thursday. The Hilltoppers will take on the Lightning at 4:30 p.m. Catholic Central is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7.3 runs per game this season.
Catholic Central took a loss when they played away from home on Thursday, but their home fans gave them all the motivation they needed on Tuesday. They came out on top against Living Word Lutheran by a score of 12-7.
Isabella Gratton made a big impact while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out six batters over seven innings while giving up five earned (and two unearned) runs off nine hits. Gratton was also big at the plate, getting on base in three of her four plate appearances with three runs, one stolen base, and one double. She is on a roll when it comes to stolen bases, as she's now snagged at least one in each of the last three games she's played.
In other batting news, Macklin Wilson and Avery Bauer did most of the damage at the plate: Wilson went 1-for-3 with two stolen bases, two runs, and two RBI, while Bauer got on base in three of her four plate appearances with two stolen bases, two runs, and one RBI. Wilson also hit a double, marking her first of the season. Jenna Pechous was another key player, getting on base in three of her four plate appearances with two stolen bases, one run, and one double.
Catholic Central always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .583. That's the best OBP they've posted all season.
Meanwhile, Lake Country Lutheran came into Tuesday's matchup having lost five straight, but that streak is now in the rearview. Everything went their way against St. Francis on Tuesday as they made off with a 15-0 win.
Like Catholic Central, Lake Country Lutheran also got a great game from a two-way player: Grace Sonnleitner. She pitched three innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. Sonnleitner was also solid in the batter's box, going a perfect 3-for-3 with one run and one RBI.
In other batting news, Lake Country Lutheran got a massive performance out of Katelyn Meulendyke, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with three runs, three RBI, and one triple. Another player making a difference was Kierstyn Black, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with two runs, two doubles, and two RBI.
Catholic Central picked up their first home victory, bumping their record up to 2-4. As for Lake Country Lutheran, their record now sits at 2-6.
The pitchers for both teams better look sharp on Thursday as neither team is afraid to steal. Catholic Central has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 5.2 stolen bases per game. However, it's not like Lake Country Lutheran struggles in that department as they've been averaging 2.9 stolen bases. The only question left is which team can snag more.
Everything went Catholic Central's way against Lake Country Lutheran in their previous matchup back in May of 2021, as Catholic Central made off with a 13-2 win. Will the Hilltoppers repeat their success, or do the Lightning have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
