Basketball Recap: Wheeler Warriors vs. Lincoln Lions
If Wheeler was feeling good fresh off their 66-43 takedown of Smithfield last Saturday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. The Wheeler Warriors were just a bucket shy of victory on Monday and fell 67-66 to the Lincoln Lions. While losing is never fun, the Warriors can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Rhode Island basketball rankings (they are ranked 68th, while the Lions are ranked 12th).
Leading Lincoln to victory were Brian Gugel and Ace Cote. Gugel went 9 for 17 en route to 22 points and seven rebounds, while Cote posted 22 points and seven assists. What's more, Cote also posted a 33% three-point shooting accuracy, which is the highest he's posted since back in December of 2023. Another player making a difference was Andrew Picozzi, who had 11 points and five boards.
Wheeler's loss dropped their record down to 1-4. As for Lincoln, their record now sits at 13-8.
Looking ahead, Wheeler will be playing at home against Lexington Christian Academy at 4:30 p.m. on Friday. One thing working in Lexington Christian Academy's favor is that they have posted at least 55 points every time they've taken the court this season. As for Lincoln, they wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next contest, a 46-42 defeat against North Providence on the 11th.
