Preview: Myers Park Mustangs vs. Charlotte Catholic Cougars
Myers Park is on a four-game streak of home wins, while Charlotte Catholic is on a three-game streak of away wins: one of those streaks is about to end. The Myers Park Mustangs will take on the Charlotte Catholic Cougars at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. One thing working in Myers Park's favor is that they have now posted big point totals in their last five games.
Even though South Mecklenburg scored an imposing 31 points on Friday, Myers Park still came out on top. Myers Park slipped by South Mecklenburg 32-31. Given Myers Park's advantage in MaxPreps' North Carolina football rankings (they are ranked 26th, while South Mecklenburg is ranked 139th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Rj Alexander was the offensive standout of the game as he rushed for 168 yards and a touchdown while picking up 10.5 yards per carry, and also caught a touchdown. Another player making a difference was Wendell Thompson, who threw for 150 yards and three touchdowns.
Meanwhile, Charlotte Catholic can now show off six landslide victories after their most recent match two weeks ago. They simply couldn't be stopped as they easily beat East Mecklenburg 42-0 at home. The score at the end of the third wound up being the final score as Charlotte Catholic just coasted through the last quarter.
Among those leading the charge was Charlie Smith, who threw for 125 yards and two touchdowns. Zachary Noonan got in on the action too, converting a pick into a touchdown.
Their wins lifted both teams to an identical 7-3.
Friday's contest might be decided on the ground as these two are both standouts in the run game. Myers Park has been excellent on the ground this season, having averaged 161.7 rushing yards per game. However, it's not like Charlotte Catholic struggles in that department as they've been even better at 163 per game. It's looking like Friday's match might have some serious battles in the trenches.
