Football Recap: Battle Creek Takes a Loss

Battle Creek was the 48-20 winner over Bergan Catholic when they last played one another back in September of 2024, but their luck changed this time around. The Braves were beaten by the Knights 47-6 on Friday. The Braves were in a tough position after the first half, with the score already sitting at 20-0.

Even if they lost, Battle Creek's defensive line still kept up the pressure with five sacks. The heavy lifting was done by Isaiah Bleich and Connor Heiderman, who racked up four sacks between them. Heiderman also set a new season-high mark in total tackles with nine.

Bergan Catholic's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Austin Scheuler led the charge by throwing for 342 yards and four touchdowns while completing 82.6% of his passes, and also punching in one rushing score. The dominant performance also gave Scheuler a new career-high in passer rating (162.6). Another pass catcher making a difference was Gavin Dean, who picked up 136 receiving yards and a pair of scores.

This is the second loss in a row for Battle Creek and nudges their season record down to 1-3. As for Bergan Catholic, their win bumped their record up to 3-1.

Battle Creek and Bergan Catholic will both get their first taste of in-conference action in their upcoming games. The Braves are set to challenge their familiar foe Oakland-Craig on Friday. Meanwhile, Bergan Catholic will take on rival Yutan on Friday.
