Baseball Game Preview: Smithfield Sentinels vs. Bishop Hendricken Hawks

Smithfield hasn't had much luck against Bishop Hendricken recently, but that could start to change on Wednesday. The Sentinels are taking a road trip to challenge the Hawks at 4:30 p.m. Smithfield is coming into the match hot, having won their last four games.

Smithfield is coming in fresh off a high-stakes matchup with another one of Rhode Island's top teams: Westerly, who was ranked seventh at the time (Smithfield was ranked sixth). The Sentinels skirted past the Bulldogs 2-0. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest win the Sentinels have posted since April 9, 2024.

Smithfield's victory was truly a team effort as three different players contributed at least one hit. One of them was Jacob Sylvester, who went 1-for-3 with one run and one RBI.

Meanwhile, Bishop Hendricken was able to grind out a solid win over Portsmouth on Monday, taking the game 4-1. The victory continues a trend for the Hawks in their matchups with the Patriots: they've now won seven in a row.

Patrick Clemmey looked comfortable as he struck out six batters over two innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. He has been consistent recently: he hasn't tossed less than six strikeouts in three consecutive appearances.

Smithfield's record is now 11-5. As for Bishop Hendricken, their record now sits at 15-1.

Smithfield might still be hurting after the 13-3 loss they got from Bishop Hendricken when the teams last played back in April of 2024. Can the Sentinels avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
