Basketball Game Preview: La Veta Redhawks vs. Springfield Longhorns

The La Veta Redhawks just played yesterday, but they'll still head out to face the Springfield Longhorns at 2:00 p.m. on Friday.

La Veta is headed into the match out to prove that what happened against Primero on Thursday (when they were outscored in every quarter) was just a minor bump in the road. La Veta took a blow against Primero, falling 74-32. While losing is never fun, the Redhawks can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Colorado basketball rankings (they are ranked 318th, while the Bulldogs are ranked 118th).

Meanwhile, Springfield had to endure a nine-game losing streak, but that streak is no more. They narrowly escaped with a win as the squad sidled past Kit Carson 46-43.

La Veta better keep an eye on Colby Batterton. He was instrumental in Springfield's win, dropping a double-double on 18 points and ten boards. That makes it six consecutive games in which Batterton has scored at least a third of Springfield's points. Rhett Bray was another key player, putting up six points and 11 rebounds.

Springfield smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 14 offensive rebounds. That's the most offensive boards they've managed all season.

This is the second loss in a row for La Veta and nudges their season record down to 5-7. As for Springfield, their victory ended a four-game drought on the road and puts them at 2-9.

Things could have been worse for La Veta, but things could have been a whole lot better as they took a 68-51 loss to Springfield when the teams last played back in January of 2024. Can La Veta avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
