Head coach Scott Drew of Baylor landed one of the most significant verbal commitments in program history Monday when elite 2012 prospect
Isaiah Austin of
Grace Prep (Arlington, Texas) made a pledge to the Bears during a national broadcast of the adidas Nations event in Chicago live on CBS College Sports.
As a sophomore, Austin helped Grace Prep reach the TAPPS (Texas private schools) 4A semifinals and compile a 21-10 record.
Austin is one of the most intriguing young prospects in the country with legitimate perimeter skills to go along with his 7-foot frame. His shot is dependable all the way out to the high school 3-point line. He is a lock for a spot in the top five of MaxPreps.com's 2012 Top 100 scheduled to be released Aug. 24.
Austin's father, Alex Austin, played collegiately at Arizona State before embarking on a 15-year professional career that included stops in the NBA, ABA, CBA, Europe and South America. Alex Austin runs a basketball club based in Utah (A-Train For Youth) and coached a team Isaiah played for at the adidas Super 64 last month in Las Vegas.
Arizona, Connecticut, Kentucky, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State were also finalists for Austin's services.
