Softball Game Preview: Broadneck Bruins vs. Southern Bulldogs

Broadneck is 8-2 against Southern since April of 2017 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Tuesday. The Bruins will square off against the Bulldogs at 4:45 p.m. Broadneck is coming into the match hot, having won their last five games.

Broadneck took a 11-run defeat the last time they faced off against Northern, but this time they managed to keep it close and that made all the difference. The Bruins narrowly escaped with a victory as the team sidled past the Patriots 2-0.

Not much got past Rylan Crisafulli, who gave up just two hits and racked up 18 Ks to keep Northern off the board. Those 18 strikeouts set a new season-high mark for Crisafulli.

On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Isabella Herrera, who went 1-for-3 with one home run. The team also got some help courtesy of Corinn Bennett, who went 2-for-3 with one stolen base, one run, and one double.

Kent Island hit Southern with a six-run fifth inning on Thursday, which goes a long way in explaining the final result. The Bulldogs came up short against the Buccaneers, falling 16-0.

Broadneck's win was their fifth straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 11-2-1. Those road victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 0.4 runs on average over those games. As for Southern, they have been struggling recently as they've lost five of their last six contests. That's put a noticeable dent in their 3-8 record this season.

Broadneck came out on top in a nail-biter against Southern when the teams last played back in April of 2024, sneaking past 2-0. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Bruins since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
