Baseball Recap: Seaside Comes Up Short

Seaside extended their losing streak (dating back to last season) to 11 on Thursday, dropping their season record down to 0-9 in the process. They lost 22-0 to the Watsonville Wildcatz. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Wildcatz this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 16-0 on Tuesday.

As for Watsonville, their victory was their fifth straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 9-9. Their hitters stepped up their game for this one, as that was the most runs they've scored all season.

For Watsonville's part, Mathew Silva made a big impact no matter where he played. On the mound, he didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only two hits while striking out nine over five innings pitched. Those nine strikeouts gave Silva a new career-high. He was also stellar in the batter's box, getting on base in five of his six plate appearances with three runs and three RBI. He is becoming a predictor of Watsonville's success: when he posts at least two runs the team is undefeated (and 5-9 when he doesn't).

In other batting news, Ben Miller was a standout: he went a perfect 2-for-2 with four RBI and two runs. He has become a key player for Watsonville: the team is undefeated when he posts at least two runs, but 4-9 otherwise. Jesus Heredia also deserves some recognition as he got his first hit of the season.

Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Seaside will square off against North Salinas at 4:00 p.m. on Monday. As for Watsonville, they will take on St. Monica at 6:00 p.m. on the 25th.
