Baseball Recap: Johnson Comes Up Short

Johnson had lost five straight on the road dating back to last season, but on Tuesday they dropped down to 1-9 to make it six. They lost 19-1 to the Como Park Cougars. For those keeping track at home, that's the biggest defeat the Governors have suffered against the Cougars since May 1, 2023.

As for Como Park, they have been performing well recently as they've won three of their last four matchups. That's provided a nice bump to their 4-9 record this season. The contest marked their most dominant win of the season.

For Como Park's part, Brendan Avant was a major factor no matter where he played. On the mound, he pitched two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. What's more, Avant posted three strikeouts, the most he's had since back in May of 2025. He was also solid in the batter's box, getting on base in two of his three plate appearances with two stolen bases, one run, and one RBI.

In other batting news, Como Park let Joseph Thomas and Mitchell Pelzer run wild. Thomas went 2-for-3 with two stolen bases, three runs, and three RBI, while Pelzer went 2-for-3 with two stolen bases, three RBI, and two runs. That's the most runs Thomas has posted since back in April of 2025. The team also got some help courtesy of Eli Savolainen, who got on base in five of his six plate appearances with two runs and two RBI.

Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Johnson will host Highland Park at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday. The Scots have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 9.9 runs per game on average), something the Governors will no doubt try to take advantage of. As for Como Park, they will be playing in front of their home fans against Harding at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
