Hoxie extended their losing streak to seven on Tuesday, dropping them down to 1-8. They lost 22-0 to the Newport Greyhounds. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Greyhounds this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 15-0 back in March.
Hoxie saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Christian Nichols, who went a perfect 1-for-1 with one stolen base.
As for Newport, their win ended a four-game drought on the road and puts them at 4-7-1. Their hitters stepped up their game for this one, as that was the most runs they've scored all season.
On Newport's side, Ryan Burgin and Noah Tate were major factors no matter where they played. Throwing, Burgin tossed one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits. Meanwhile, Tate pitched two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. Burgin is becoming a predictor of Newport's success: when he allows at most one hit the team is 3-1 (and 1-6-1 when he doesn't). At the plate, Burgin went 1-for-3 with two runs, one stolen base, and two RBI, while Tate went 2-for-4 with two stolen bases, three runs, and three RBI. Tate also put up a double, which was his first of the season.
In other batting news, Newport got a massive performance out of Luke Reynolds, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with three RBI, two runs, and two doubles. Jaden Robinson was another key player, going a perfect 2-for-2 with three RBI, two runs, and one stolen base.
Hoxie and Newport could both be facing uphill battles in their next games considering their disadvantage in the MaxPreps Arkansas Rankings. The Mustangs (ranked 210th) will meet Harrisburg (ranked 88th) at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday. Meanwhile, Newport will take on Walnut Ridge at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday with a big rank disadvantage (159 vs. 19).
