Basketball Recap: Portage Takes a Loss

Portage was not able to break out of their rough patch on Friday as the team picked up their fourth straight defeat. They were beaten by the Merrillville Pirates 57-12. While losing is never fun, the Indians can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Indiana basketball rankings (they are ranked 228th, while the Pirates are ranked 45th).

Portage got a good chunk of their points from the dynamic duo of Abby Nelson and Kelis Scott, who each put up three points. Peyton Wilson held things down on the boards with five rebounds.

Merrillville got their victory on the backs of several key players, but it was Malika Jenkins out in front who posted ten points and five assists. Nyesha Davis was another key player, putting up nine points and eight rebounds.

Portage's loss dropped their record down to 8-11. As for Merrillville, the win was the fifth in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 13-6.

Portage has already played their next contest, a 34-16 victory against Griffith on the 25th. As for Merrillville, they also wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next match, a 72-40 win against Lowell on the 28th.
