Newman Central Catholic's game last Monday was a loss, but they didn't let that memory haunt them on Wednesday. They sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 6-5 victory over the Bureau Valley Storm. The win was some much needed relief for the Comets as it spelled an end to their three-game losing streak.

Gianna Vance spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered three earned (and two unearned) runs on five hits. Those hits marked the first that she allowed this season.

At the plate, the team relied heavily on Lucy Oetting, who went 2-for-3 with one home run and two runs. That home run was her first of the season.

Newman Central Catholic's record is now 4-8. As for Bureau Valley, their defeat ended a three-game streak of away wins and brought them to 9-7.

Looking ahead, Newman Central Catholic will square off against Erie-Prophetstown at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday. The Panthers will aim to continue their three-game streak of scoring more runs each game than the last. As for Bureau Valley, they will face off against Illinois Valley Central at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday. The Storm's pitchers better be ready for this one: the Grey Ghosts have averaged an impressive 9.5 runs per game this season.
