League recap: Leeds tops Alexandria to extend winning streak

3A Region 4 recap November 5, 2013

Leeds extended the longest winning streak in 3A Region 4 this week by beating Alexandria, 44-17. The victory was the fifth in a row for the Green Wave.

Montevallo fell to Vincent 48-7 last week, the largest margin of any game.

Central of Coosa County's offense was unstoppable this week, as it produced the league's top passer, rusher and receiver. Andrew Hammond threw for 178 and 2 touchdowns and Tre Royal had 132 yards receiving. On the ground Rod Whetstone contributed 176 yards. Marquise Simmons helped Central of Coosa County's passing attack out by catching 2 balls for 36 yards.

Daniel Phillips made the biggest impact on defense this week as Trinity Presbyterian fell to Montgomery Academy. The 6-foot-2 senior pulled down 1 interception, recorded 1 fumble and grabbed 1 sack.

Whetstone was the most successful running back in the league this week. He ran for 176 yards on 31 carries as the Cougars topped Horseshoe Bend. Hammond also contributed to the rushing game with 22 yards on the ground.

Thanks to the talents of Hammond and Whetstone, Central of Coosa County has been able to do all sorts of things on offense. Hammond leads the league in passing with 1,007 yards, while Whetstone has rushed for 546 yards this season. The Wildcats' Robert Adams leads the league in receiving yards with 798 on 57 catches.

Leeds led the league in scoring this week by notching 44 points on the Valley Cubs.
