Baseball Recap: Madras Comes Up Short

Madras had lost four straight at home, but on Monday they dropped down to 5-7 to make it five. They fell just short of The Dalles Riverhawks by a score of 8-7. The White Buffalos were not able to repeat the success they had when they faced the Riverhawks earlier this season, when they won 11-7.

Jared Penaloza and Bentley Stockton stepped up to the plate in a big way. Penaloza went 2-for-4 with three runs, one triple, and two RBI, while Stockton went 2-for-3 with one stolen base, two RBI, and one double. Penaloza has become a key player for Madras: the team is 2-1 when he posts at least two runs, but 3-6 otherwise. Julyan Barajas also deserves some recognition as he snagged his first stolen bases of the season.

As for The Dalles, they have been performing well recently as they've won five of their last six contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 11-5 record this season. Those victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 7.8 runs over those games.

On The Dalles' side, Gunner Bustos was a major factor no matter where he played. He didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only one hit while striking out six over 4.1 innings pitched. Bustos has been consistent: he hasn't given up more than two walks in five consecutive appearances. He was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-4 with two doubles and one RBI. Those two doubles gave him a new career-high.

Bustos wasn't the only one making solid contact as six players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Evan Ortega, who went 1-for-4 with one stolen base and two RBI. Another was Kale Beardmore, who went 1-for-3 with one stolen base and one run.
