Preview: Corner Canyon Chargers vs. Copper Hills Grizzlies

The Corner Canyon Chargers will head out on the road to face off against the Copper Hills Grizzlies at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. Hopefully Corner Canyon focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 18 on Tuesday.

Corner Canyon suffered their closest defeat since December 18, 2023 on Tuesday. They fell just short of Herriman by a score of 43-40. Corner Canyon has struggled against Herriman recently, as their game on Tuesday was their fifth consecutive lost matchup.

Despite the loss, Corner Canyon got a solid performance out of Elina Mortensen, who scored 18 points along with two steals and two blocks. Mortensen hasn't dropped below 15 points for 16 straight games. Another player making a difference was Maia Rhay, who scored 11 points along with seven rebounds.

Meanwhile, Copper Hills faced Mountain Ridge in a battle between two of the state's top teams. Copper Hills took their game on the road on Tuesday with ease, bagging a 71-42 victory over Mountain Ridge. Copper Hills has made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won 11 matchups by 22 points or more this season.

Copper Hills' win was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Ayla Marston, who scored 17 points along with six rebounds and three steals. The team also got some help courtesy of Ellie Taylor, who scored 14 points along with six rebounds and three steals.

Corner Canyon has been struggling recently as they've lost three of their last four games, which put a noticeable dent in their 12-8 record this season. As for Copper Hills, the win (which was their fourth in a row) raised their record to 19-1.

Some high-performance offense is likely on the agenda as both teams are some of the highest scoring teams in the league. Corner Canyon hasn't had any problem running up the score this season, having averaged 60 points per game. However, it's not like Copper Hills struggles in that department as they've been averaging 58 points per game. With both teams so easily able to put up points, the only question left is who can run the score up higher.

Corner Canyon didn't have too much breathing room in their matchup against Copper Hills in their previous matchup back in January, but they still walked away with a 52-48 win. The rematch might be a little tougher for Corner Canyon since the team won't have the home-court advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
