Softball Game Preview: Newton South Lions vs. Cambridge Rindge & Latin Falcons

The Newton South Lions will venture away from home to square off against the Cambridge Rindge & Latin Falcons at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Newton South is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 8.7 runs per game this season.

Newton South is coming in fresh off a high-stakes matchup with another one of Massachusetts' top teams: Boston Latin Academy, who was ranked 13th at the time (Newton South was ranked 14th). The Lions walked away with an 8-5 win over the Dragons on Tuesday. The Lions haven't had any issues with the Dragons recently, as the game was their sixth consecutive victory against them.

Lauren Kelley was excellent, scoring a run and stealing two bases while getting on base in three of her four plate appearances. Maggie Bluestein also deserves some recognition as she scored her first run of the season.

Newton South always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .516. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Boston Latin Academy only posted an OBP of .320.

Meanwhile, Cambridge Rindge & Latin was not able to break out of their rough patch on Monday as the team picked up their eighth straight loss dating back to last season. They came up short against Belmont, falling 17-5. The match marked the Falcons' lowest-scoring game so far this season.

Cambridge Rindge & Latin's defeat dropped their record down to 0-5. As for Newton South, they now have a winning record of 4-3.

Newton South took their win against Cambridge Rindge & Latin in their previous meeting back in April of 2024 by a conclusive 27-14 score. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Lions since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
