Oscar Smith (Chesapeake, Va.) handed Ocean Lakes a stunning 29-19 defeat Friday night, ending Ocean Lakes' bid to repeat at state champion. A missed extra point by Ocean Lakes (11-1) that would have tied the game at 20 threw the Dolphins into desperation, and they unsuccessfully tried an onside kick with about 90 seconds left before giving up nine more points.
After jumping to a 13-0 lead by half time, Oscar Smith (12-0) scored again in the third quarter on a 40-yard pass from
Shon Mitchell to
Khalik Perry to take a commanding 20-0 lead.
As the third quarter ended, Ocean Lakes began its rally.
Tylan McElhenie caught a touchdown pass from
Tyler Desue to make it 20-6 entering the fourth quarter.
A few minutes later, a
Jake Low rushing touchdown made it a one-score game, 20-13, with seven minutes remaining.
Following the second interception of the game by
Tahj Capehart, Ocean Lakes drove deep into Oscar Smith territory and seemed to have all the momentum.
Khalan Laborn plunged into the end zone from 5 yards out to make it 20-19 with less than 90 seconds to play.
Following the missed extra point attempt, the game quickly unraveled for Ocean Lakes.
It was forced to attempt an onside kick, which Oscar Smith returned inside the 5-yard line. That set up a Justin Smith three-yard touchdown run to make it 27-19. On the ensuing kick off, Oscar Smith was awarded a safety after a special teams mishap by Ocean Lakes.
The victory allowed Oscar Smith to exact some revenge after last year's season-ending loss to Ocean Lakes.
