Winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Southmont). They took their contest on Friday with ease, bagging a 60-29 victory over the Western Boone Stars. That's the second time they've managed to beat them this season, as they also won 48-40 back in November.
Leading Southmont to victory were Ella Barry and Layla Gomez. Barry dropped a double-double on 27 points and ten boards, while Gomez went 9 of 16 on her way to 18 points in addition to eight boards and six assists. That makes it seven consecutive games in which Barry has scored at least a third of Southmont's points. Another player making a difference was Makinzie Wood, who posted four points in addition to five rebounds and three steals.
They weren't the only one working in the assists department: Southmont was working as a unit and finished the game with 12 assists. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Western Boone only posted six assists.
Western Boone lost despite a true team effort on offense, the best among them being Ally Lewis, who had eight points and nine boards. The team also got some help courtesy of Olivia Reagan, who put up seven points.
Southmont moved to 4-9 with that win, which also ended their five-game losing streak. As for Western Boone, they dropped their record down to 3-7 with the defeat, which was their fifth straight on the road.
Southmont will have some time to savor their victory since their next game is a little ways off: they'll take on Riverton Parke at 7:30 p.m. on January 7, 2025. As for Western Boone, they will be taking part in a tournament against Heritage Christian at 1:00 p.m. on Friday.
