Baseball Game Preview: Mendon Unity Mustangs vs. Brown County Hornets

The Mendon Unity Mustangs will head out to face off against the Brown County Hornets at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Mendon Unity is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7.7 runs per game this season.

Mendon Unity's pitching crew heads into the matchup hoping to repeat the dominance they displayed on Friday. They blew past Pleasant Hill/Western 18-0. The victory made it back-to-back wins for the Mustangs.

Jayce Huntley was a major factor while hitting and pitching. On the mound, he tossed two innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. He is becoming a predictor of Mendon Unity's success: when he allows at most two hits the team is 3-1 (and 9-11 when he doesn't). Huntley was also big at the plate, going a perfect 2-for-2 with two RBI. Those two RBI gave him a new career-high.

In other batting news, Adler Gray was incredible, going 1-for-2 with five RBI, three runs, and one double. Mendon Unity is undefeated when Gray posts two or more runs, but 9-12 otherwise. Another player making a difference was Skylor Goudschaal, who went 1-for-2 with two runs, two RBI, and one double.

Mendon Unity was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .393. They are a perfect 3-0 when they post a batting average of .375 or better.

Meanwhile, there's no place like home for Brown County, who bounced back after a loss on the road last Thursday. They came out on top against Rushville-Industry by a score of 17-13 on Friday. The victory continues a trend for the Hornets in their matchups with the Rockets: they've now won five in a row.

Brown County's record is now 21-9. As for Mendon Unity, the win got them back to even at 12-12.

Mendon Unity was able to grind out a solid victory over Brown County when the teams last played back in March of 2024, winning 4-1. Do the Mustangs have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Hornets turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
